What our team is actually wearing this season — tested in Reykjavík winds and Copenhagen drizzle.
The Nuptse is a no-brainer for sub-zero commutes. We've worn ours for three winters and the down still lofts like new.
Best OverallCarhartt's Active Jacket has become our staff uniform on grey days — broken-in canvas, fleece-lined hood, hides coffee stains brilliantly.
Editor's PickHeattech is the cheat code. We layer it under everything from knits to denim shirts. Half the price of merino with surprisingly little bulk.
Best ValueIf you only own one pair of jeans, make it the 501. The pale-wash version pairs beautifully with cream knits and slate parkas.
Wardrobe StapleThe Better Sweater fleece walks the line between trail gear and office-acceptable. It's our most-recommended item, full stop.

What's moving fastest from our Helsinki warehouse this week.
Oversized chunky knits in ice-pale tones — pairing them with raw denim is the look of the season.
Nike Dunks and New Balance 550s keep flying out. Stock on cream colorways is genuinely tight.
Patagonia Better Sweater in natural and oatmeal is restocked weekly and gone within days.
The Nuptse silhouette is back in a big way — black and TNF white moving fastest.
Heattech tees became a sleeper hit once temperatures dropped below 5°C.
Carhartt WIP jackets crossing over from skate shops into wider rotation.
Picking a winter jacket is a commitment — here's how the heavy hitters stack up.
| Product | Insulation | Best For | Weight | Water Resistance | Price Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The North Face Nuptse Jacket | 700-fill Down | Sub-zero commutes | 780g | DWR-treated shell | $280–$330 |
| Carhartt WIP OG Active Jacket | Quilted fleece lining | Mild-to-cool weather | 1,100g | Water-repellent canvas | $220–$260 |
| Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece | 100% recycled polyester fleece | Layering / shoulder seasons | 490g | None (wind-permeable) | $140–$160 |
| Uniqlo Heattech Ultra Warm T-Shirt | Thermal-knit synthetic blend | Base layer / indoors | 180g | Moisture-wicking | $25–$35 |
Our buying team's notes on building a winter wardrobe that actually works.
Base layer (Heattech or merino), mid layer (fleece or knit), shell (down or canvas). Adding a fourth layer rarely adds warmth — it just restricts movement and makes you sweat, which makes you colder when you stop.
A 700-fill down jacket like the Nuptse will be warmer AND lighter than a cheap 550-fill puffer with more grams of down. Fill power measures the loft of the down, which is what actually traps heat.
Especially with Dunks and Air Max 90s — they fit close, and you'll want room for a heavier sock. ASICS Gel-Kayano tends to run true; New Balance 550 fits a touch wide.
Cream, bone, and ice-blue tones can read flat in flat winter light. Mix in heavy knits, brushed wool, and matte denim to add depth. Avoid stacking three smooth fabrics in similar tones — it washes out.
Patagonia's Better Sweater is machine-washable on cold and lasts longer that way. Dry cleaning actually strips the loft and shortens its lifespan considerably.
Real feedback from real customers — pulled straight from our reviews.
★★★★★"Bought the Nuptse before a December trip to Tromsø and it absolutely earned its keep — wore it for a 4-hour northern lights tour at -18°C and never reached for the second layer in my bag. Only nitpick is the inside pocket is tiny, my phone barely fits with the case on. Still, I'd buy it again tomorrow."
★★★★"I'd been wearing the same Patagonia fleece my brother handed down to me for eight years, finally bit the bullet and got a new one. Color is slightly off from what's in the photos — mine looks more oatmeal than the cream I was expecting — but the fit and feel are exactly as I remembered. Shipping took 6 days to Sweden which felt a bit slow."
★★★★★"Ordered three Heattech tees after my colleague wouldn't stop raving about them. Honestly skeptical for the price — I'd been buying merino for years — but they really do work. Wore one under a thin wool coat through a Helsinki cold snap and was fine. They do pick up static like crazy with synthetic dresses, fair warning. Bought two more last week."
